A 20-year-old prisoner escaped from a facility near Lyon, south-east France, on Friday by hiding in his cellmate’s bag as the latter was being released.

According to a communiqué from the prison administration released to AFP, the young man was serving “multiple sentences” at the time of his escape.

He took advantage of his cellmate’s release to conceal himself in the latter’s luggage and exit the prison, the communiqué confirmed, as originally reported by news channel BFMTV.

The Lyon prosecutor’s office noted that the escapee was subject to a detention order as part of a judicial investigation into organised crime. An investigation into “organised escape and criminal association” has been launched.

Additionally, an internal investigation has been initiated to “shed light” on the circumstances of the escape. Prosecutors and law enforcement were informed “immediately” about the incident. The prison administration stated it will enforce all necessary disciplinary actions.
