Police interrupted a wedding convoy on Saturday evening in Puurs-Sint-Amands and revoked seven driving licences, according to police zone Rivierenland on Monday morning.
Around 21:00, a report was received about a group of cars driving in a convoy on the N16, travelling from Temse towards Willebroek. The convoy reportedly stopped abruptly at times, allowing passengers to exit their vehicles in the middle of the road.
“The decorated cars were driving slowly with all their hazard lights flashing,” spokesperson Dirk Van de Sande said. “They occupied both lanes to prevent other road users from overtaking.”
All seven drivers were from the Charleroi region. “They did not appreciate our intervention and checks,” Van de Sande added. “They argued that, in their culture, celebrating a wedding in this manner is normal.”
On orders from the public prosecutor, the seven driving licences were immediately revoked for 15 days. The drivers were also issued a fine for “malicious obstruction of traffic.”
