In Belgium, Flemish, Walloon, and Brussels residents show distinct preferences when buying new cars, with different models topping the sales charts in each region during the first half of 2025, according to data from the mobility federations Febiac and Traxio.

Between January and June, 608,426 cars were registered in Belgium, including 234,616 new vehicles, representing an almost 11% decrease compared to the previous year, and 373,810 used cars, which saw a 0.9% increase.

BMW is currently the most popular brand for new cars, with its X1 model leading sales. The X1 was sold 9,041 times in Belgium in the first six months, 7,458 of which were in Flanders.

Although ranked fifth among brands, Dacia’s Sandero was the second best-selling model, with 6,263 registrations. It was the top choice in Wallonia with 3,552 sales, followed by another Dacia model, the Duster, with 2,443 sales. Nationwide, Citroën’s C3 took the third spot with 4,988 sales and was the most popular in Brussels.

Febiac and Traxio noted that 14 out of the top 25 models were electric vehicles. The most popular fully electric cars during this period were the BMW iX1, Audi Q6 e-tron, and Tesla Model Y.

Currently, almost one in three new cars (32.8%) is fully electric, largely due to the leasing market, where over half of the cars are electric. In contrast, fewer than one in ten private buyers opts for an electric model. Only one in twenty-five cars sold on the second-hand market is fully electric.

Petrol cars remain the favourites, accounting for 42.7% of new car sales and 55.5% of the second-hand market during the first half of the year.
