A man who fired shots at the Brussels police on Saturday morning before being shot himself has been charged with attempted murder, according to the Brussels public prosecutor’s office. Authorities have indicated that there is no evidence of a terrorist motive in this case.
The incident occurred around 7:00 on Saturday morning in Steenstraat, near the Bourse in Brussels. The police noticed a man walking with a weapon, which prompted him to open fire on them. Police returned fire, hitting the man in his left leg. He was apprehended and taken to the hospital. No one else was injured.
“The suspect is a 26-year-old man, and he has since been interviewed by the investigating judge,” the prosecutor’s office stated on Monday. “He has been charged with attempted murder and remanded in custody.”
