The Flemish government has reached an agreement to continue the “Blue Deal,” a plan developed by its predecessor to better prepare Flanders against the risks of floods and droughts, Environment Minister Jo Brouns announced on Tuesday.

An additional €330 million will be allocated during this legislative term, supplementing the regular budget of the environmental administration. New investments will primarily focus on areas where programmes have already been initiated in the previous term, as these are at the highest risk.

Significant work is also planned for both navigable and non-navigable waterways. The public company Aquafin will invest €1.2 billion in wastewater treatment, while local authorities will receive €1.1 billion for their sewer networks.

The plan also includes a reform of the water bill to better reflect consumption and make it fairer for single-person households.
