Starting 1 August 2025, the responsibility for decommissioning vehicle number plates in Belgium will be entirely managed by the Vehicle Registration Authority (DIV), ending the current role of Bpost.
To ensure continuity for the public, Bpost will offer a return service that will be chargeable at €17.99 from next month.
In June, the FPS Mobility and Transport announced changes to the process for returning plates, which will soon need to be sent directly to the DIV or deposited in one of two designated boxes, one at the DIV counter in Brussels and the other at the entrance of the FPS’s main building.
Currently, Bpost still handles plate decommissions, but its contract is about to expire. From 1 August, Bpost will introduce a new service allowing plates to be handed over unwrapped at a post office, where the staff will verify them as official and issue a deposit receipt with the registration number.
A notification will be sent through Track & Trace once the plate reaches the DIV. However, this service, priced at €17.99, is more expensive than standard mailing, where individuals need to wrap the plates themselves. Postal costs for self-wrapping start at €5.15, with the FPS Mobility specifying that plates can be folded to fit an A4 envelope but must not be cut.
