Around 20 climate activists from Climate Justice for Rosa installed a memorial for the victims of the 2021 floods in the Ardennes at the House of Parliamentarians, just a stone’s throw from the Federal Chamber of Representatives in Brussels on Tuesday morning.

These activists, including environmental advocate Benjamin Van Bunderen-Robberechts, took this action independently due to the lack of an official memorial day for these victims in Belgium. Although Europe observes a commemoration for climate victims annually on 15 July, Van Bunderen-Robberechts notes, “Belgium organises nothing. No ceremony. No recognition. No names.” He personally lost a close friend in the 2021 floods.

An official memorial day, though recognised at the Belgian level, is yet to be established. A large metal memorial featuring the names of the 39 Belgian victims from the 2021 floods aims to prompt federal authorities into action. Climate Justice for Rosa has placed the plaque prominently at the House of Parliamentarians to emphasise their demand, hoping it will eventually find a place in the Federal Chamber.

“This action pays tribute to those we have lost while also serving as a political signal. The climate crisis claims lives, here and now,” states Van Bunderen-Robberechts. “It’s time these individuals are honoured in our collective memory.”

Many politicians attended the commemoration. Bart Dhondt, chair of the Green party, was also present to show support, stating, “Reading these names is deeply affecting. It evokes the war memorials. We must prevent future climate victims by taking action now.”
