The Flemish government has approved in principle the project decision for the Western Access to Waaslandhaven (WOW), marking a significant step in the implementation of the complex Extra Container Capacity Antwerp (ECA) project, according to Mobility and Public Works Minister Annick De Ridder of the N-VA party.

Minister De Ridder stated that the project prepares the Port of Antwerp for anticipated global trade growth and ensures improved access to the Waasland Port. Without proper access, there is a risk of increased traffic congestion in the surrounding villages, she noted. The West Link will facilitate smooth, safe, and sustainable port traffic via road, rail, and cycling paths, thereby enhancing economic strength while improving quality of life and promoting future-oriented mobility.

The project decision will now be presented to the Council of State. The final approval is expected in the autumn, after which the bidding process and actual implementation can commence.

The WOW project involves constructing a completely new access road to the west of the Waasland Port, including rail and bicycle connections. A landscape buffer of five kilometres will be developed, eventually expanding to an 11-kilometre green corridor in combination with the second tidal dock, reducing disturbance for local residents, protecting the polder landscape, and providing recreation and ecological opportunities.

Flemish Environment Minister Jo Brouns of the CD&V party echoed the sentiments, highlighting the decision’s role in reinforcing the port as an economic engine while respecting the quality of life in nearby villages. The project aims for a smooth and sustainable connection to the Waasland Port, merging economic growth with a better balance between mobility, nature, and the living environment.
