Forty-eight inmates at Lantin Prison have been refusing to return to their cells since Saturday afternoon in protest at their detention conditions, spending the night outside.

On Saturday afternoon, when recreation time ended, about 50 prisoners refused to return to their cells. Following discussions, two inmates complied, leaving the others outside overnight.

Talks resumed on Sunday morning between prison management and two inmate representatives. As a result, one inmate agreed to return to their cell, while 47 others continued their protest, according to prison administration spokesperson Valérie Callebaut.

The inmates at Lantin are protesting against their living conditions, demanding more showers, more recreation time, and better canteen services. However, these requests are deemed logistically impossible due to prison overcrowding, Ms Callebaut explained.

The situation remains calm, with both the interior and exterior of the prison secured with the assistance of local police, added Ms Callebaut.
