The Flemish Christian Democrats (CD&V) expressed disappointment over the SNCB’s decision to award a multi-billion contract for new train units to Spanish company CAF, stating it puts over 600 jobs in Bruges at risk.

MP Franky Demon (CD&V) questions Belgium’s lack of job protection measures, emphasising that socio-economic consequences weren’t considered in the decision.

Demon argues Alstom was not only cheaper but also a proven partner in Belgium, leaving 600 Bruges families wondering how the situation escalated. He criticises the strict adherence to European procurement rules and stresses the need to consider social and economic impacts when spending public funds.

The SNCB board’s decision notes the need for local employment possibilities and clarity on ties with Israel, which Demon acknowledges as “a small step in the right direction.”

Demon hopes CAF will engage in dialogue with Alstom to explore subcontracting and job retention in Belgium, advocating for a parliamentary hearing with the SNCB management.
