A serious head-on collision between two cars occurred on Thursday morning in Papignies, within the town of Lessines.

Emergency services from Wallonia were notified at 07:52 that a major traffic accident had happened along Route des Régions (RN56) in Papignies, which connects Ath and Lessines.

Rescue units from Rebaix (Ath) and Leuze-en-Hainaut were dispatched to the scene, including a vehicle for extrication, two marking trucks, two ambulances, a medical emergency response unit, and a command vehicle. The accident involved two vehicles; during an overtaking manoeuvre, one car collided almost head-on with another travelling in the opposite direction.

“One driver was uninjured and declined further examination. The other driver, a man in his forties, suffered various injuries. Trapped in his vehicle, he was extricated and attended by emergency medical services,” explained Captain Éric Stasik, who led the operation. After stabilisation, the injured man was transported to Épicura Hospital in Ath at around 08:45. Both cars involved in the collision were registered in Belgium.
