Belgian Foreign Minister Maxime Prévot announced on Friday that he will propose a government stance on recognising Palestine ahead of the United Nations General Assembly in September.
The discussion around recognising Palestine has resurfaced as French President Emmanuel Macron declared his intention to recognise the state in September at the UN General Assembly.
“The context is evolving with the Franco-Saudi dynamic taking shape. President Abbas’s engagement meets several expectations, particularly from Belgium,” Prévot said, in a reference to a UN conference on Palestine initiated by the French and Saudi leaders and scheduled for Monday in New York.
Prévot plans to propose a stance before the UN General Assembly, taking these developments into account, while urging a focus on the humanitarian crisis, in which many people, including children, suffer and die daily due to lack of food.
Prévot also noted that Jordan may have regained permission for humanitarian airdrops. “We are in contact with Jordanian authorities to implement our proposal should Israel confirm this opening,” the Belgian Foreign Minister said.
