In a heartfelt tribute, Liverpool FC announced on Friday that they will permanently retire the number 20 jersey, previously worn by the late Diogo Jota.

The Reds expressed that Jota donned the jersey with pride, leading the team to numerous victories, stating that he will forever be Liverpool’s number 20.

Earlier on Friday, it was announced that Liverpool will host a tribute on Sunday for the Portuguese brothers Diogo Jota and André Silva, who tragically died in a car accident on 3 July.

The event will coincide with Liverpool’s first pre-season friendly match at Preston North End, a second-tier club.

Ten minutes before the 15:00 kick-off (16:00 Belgian time), actress and singer Claudia Rose Maguire will perform ‘Can’t Help Falling In Love’ by Elvis Presley and Liverpool’s anthem ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’.

Preston’s captain, Ben Whiteman, will lay a wreath among the visiting Liverpool supporters. A minute’s silence will follow as images of the brothers are displayed on the stadium’s digital screens.

Preston will also include a written tribute in their match programme, and both teams will wear black armbands in memory of the brothers.
