On Saturday evening, three drones entered the site of a Japanese nuclear power plant, but no abnormalities were found, according to the Japanese Atomic Authority.
The drones were detected by the operator of the plant located in Genkai, in the country’s south-west, as reported by the Nuclear Regulation Authority. Flights of drones near and over nuclear power plants are prohibited in Japan, reminded the authority and the police.
“No abnormalities were detected after the incident was reported, and no drones were found inside the plant’s perimeter,” a spokesperson for the organisation told AFP.
Police spokesperson Masahiro Kosho informed AFP that the drones were not recovered and the identity and motive of the drone operators remain unknown. The Genkai plant, operated by Kyushu Electric Power Co., has four reactors, two of which are undergoing permanent decommissioning.
The other two reactors continue to operate after implementing stricter safety standards following the 2011 Fukushima disaster caused by a devastating earthquake and tsunami.
