A significant fire broke out in a house on Roze Street in Eeklo, East Flanders, on Thursday morning, hospitalising two individuals for treatment.
The fire began around 9:30 and was brought under control two hours later.
Police spokesperson Emmeline Martens confirmed that two residents were hospitalised due to smoke inhalation. Several police officers were also taken to the hospital as a precaution after inhaling smoke.
The intense blaze threatened neighbouring houses, prompting an evacuation of those residents. The fire brigade advised local residents to keep windows and doors shut due to heavy smoke. A neighbourhood alert was issued because of the smoke. Roze Street and Rabautstraat were temporarily closed to traffic.
The exact cause of the fire is still unknown, and an expert has been appointed by the public prosecutor’s office to investigate.
