Belgium recorded over 35,000 road accidents in 2024, injuring more than 44,000 people and killing 470, according to the latest figures from Statbel. While overall traffic collisions are slowly declining, some roads remain stubbornly dangerous, especially for cyclists.

A detailed snapshot from 2022, the most recent year with geolocated crash data, sheds light on where these risks concentrate. That year, 37,643 injury-causing accidents were registered nationwide.

Now, thanks to improved GPS reporting by the Federal Police, 95% of them were precisely mapped.

The densest clusters of crashes were found along major urban corridors, particularly between Antwerp, Ghent, Brussels, and Liège, as well as around city ring roads and key motorway exits.

Flanders accounted for the largest share of collisions, with more than 23,000 incidents, compared to 10,090 in Wallonia and just over 4,000 in Brussels.

While minor injuries remain most common, 540 people died within 30 days of a crash in 2022, including a record 102 cyclists.

Elderly e-bike users were among the most vulnerable, a trend that has persisted in more recent years.

Despite the grim figures, road safety in Belgium is improving overall. Fatalities fell by 13% between 2022 and 2024, putting the country on cautious track toward its goal of halving road deaths by 2030.
