A serious road accident occurred late Saturday morning in the Ath region, involving a single vehicle that collided with a bridge abutment.

Emergency services in Wallonie Picarde were notified at 11:12 about a severe accident on Chaussée de Brunehaut in Houtaing, within the Ath district. The crash happened in the Frasnes-Ligne direction, near the Castle of La Berlière.

A rescue operation was launched, with a vehicle extrication team, a marking truck, an ambulance, and a mobile emergency unit dispatched from the Rebaix (Ath) fire station.

The female driver, who was the sole occupant of the car, inexplicably lost control of her vehicle. After veering into a ditch, the vehicle came to a stop against the bridge abutment.

“We had to extricate the young driver, who is in her twenties and suffered multiple fractures,” said Captain Éric Stasik, who led the intervention. “After being stabilised by paramedics, she was transferred to Épicura Hospital in Ath. Her life is not thought to be in danger.”

Local police in the Ath area have opened an investigation into the incident.
