The police in Leuven arrested a man in his thirties around midnight between Friday and Saturday, suspected of damaging several vehicles in the city centre, including a Red Cross ambulance.

CCTV footage showed the man stopping his bicycle on Minderbroedersstraat, retrieving a stone from his bike bag, and throwing it at the ambulance’s window. He then picked up the stone, put it back in his bag, and cycled away. Patrols working at the Beleuvenissen event were given a description of the suspect and soon found him riding his bike, still carrying the stone in his bag.

The man was unable to provide a reasonable explanation for possessing the stone or for breaking the ambulance window, according to police spokesperson Marc Vranckx. He was taken to the police station for further investigation, where a small quantity of marijuana was found on him.

When the suspect was stopped at Kapucijnenvoer, police discovered six more parked vehicles with similarly damaged windscreens in a car park on Redingenstraat. Shortly thereafter, another report came in of a car with a broken windscreen parked in Grasmushof. A police report was filed for all these incidents.

Authorities are investigating whether all these acts can be linked to the same suspect. They will use CCTV footage to reconstruct the man’s route through the city.
