A police motorcyclist from the Lanaken-Maasmechelen (LAMA) zone pursued a minor on a moped last Friday, who attempted to run him over during the chase.

The officer was on his way to a scheduled traffic control when he spotted the moped rider speeding without a licence plate. It turned out to be a young man riding without insurance, registration, or a licence. During the pursuit, the suspect committed 23 traffic violations.

“He even seemingly attempted to deliberately ram a police motorcyclist off the road,” said police spokesperson Amber Mach. “We take this very seriously, and it’s classified as armed resistance.”

The moped rider also fell during the chase, but continued his escape on foot, eventually evading capture. Police teams later found him in an intercepted vehicle, arrested him, and transferred him to the CARMA police zone for further questioning. The prosecutor has requested a juvenile judge.

On Friday, 1 August, several drug and alcohol checks were conducted in the LAMA police zone. A total of 306 drivers were tested for alcohol; one tested positive and another was caught using a mobile phone while driving and found to be under influence. Both drivers’ licences were immediately revoked. A third driver tested positive for cannabis, and his licence was also withdrawn.

Traffic checks took place on 2 and 3 August during the Ibiza Market and Patro Eisden fan day. All 117 drivers checked were compliant, but one was fined for driving without a licence and not wearing a seatbelt. A report was also filed against the fatbike rider using a throttle. He will need to return to the police station to prove his bicycle has been brought up to code.
