Two Dutch nationals have been arrested in the Netherlands and extradited to Belgium in connection with an explosion in January 2025 that severely damaged three homes on Plataanstraat in Mechelen.

The arrests, reported on Thursday by Het Laatste Nieuws, were confirmed by the Antwerp Public Prosecutor’s office.

The explosion, which occurred around 2:00 a.m. on 18 January, damaged three cars in addition to the three homes. No injuries were reported, although one person was taken to hospital in shock. The Laboratory and Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit were called to the scene to investigate.

Dutch police apprehended two teenage boys. They have since been brought before an investigating judge in Belgium and taken into custody.
