Gunfire erupted once again on Thursday evening at Alphonse Lemmens Square in Anderlecht, resulting in one person being shot and hospitalised, according to Brussels Fire Brigade spokesperson Walter Derieuw.

The emergency services received a call around 7.50 p.m., prompting an ambulance and a mobile emergency service unit (SMUR) to rush to the scene and transport the gunshot victim to hospital.

The victim was critically injured, according to Brussels-Midi police, who cover Anderlecht, Saint-Gilles, and Forest.

The exact circumstances of the shooting were still unclear.

The Brussels Public Prosecutor’s Office has been informed and an investigation launched. Federal Judicial Police forensic experts have been deployed to conduct technical assessments at the scene.

This shooting comes just two days after another armed incident in the same area on the night of 5 to 6 August at Lemmens Square.

On that occasion, several shell casings were found, but no injuries were reported. A suspect was, however, arrested and charged with attempted murder, possession of a firearm, criminal association, and drug possession.

It was not immediately clear whether the two incidents are connected.
