Several European leaders have called for Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to be included in the upcoming meeting between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Leaders from the United Kingdom, France, Italy, Germany, Poland, Finland, and the European Commission have stated that international borders should not be altered by force. Meaningful negotiations, they emphasise, can only occur in the context of a ceasefire or a reduction in hostilities. “The current front line should be the starting point for negotiations,” they add.
The European leaders also stress that diplomatic efforts must be accompanied by pressure on Russia to end the war. The signatories commend Trump’s diplomatic efforts and express their willingness to support the initiative.
US broadcaster NBC has reported that the White House is considering inviting Zelensky to the meeting with Putin on Friday in Alaska. NBC cited a senior US official and three individuals familiar with internal White House discussions.
