A driver was hospitalised after crashing into two electricity poles on the peripheral boulevards in Tournai during the night from Saturday to Sunday, according to local firefighters, temporarily leaving part of the neighbourhood without power.

The emergency services of Wallonie Picarde were alerted at 00:26 about the traffic accident on Boulevard Léopold in Tournai. Firefighters from the Tournai station dispatched a rescue vehicle, a marking vehicle, a mobile emergency and resuscitation care unit (SMUR), an ambulance, and a command vehicle.

The incident occurred on the road towards the Rond-Point de l’Europe, opposite the Don Bosco Institute. The driver lost control of the car, veered off course, and struck two electricity poles on the left side of the roadway, severing the second pole, which fell to the ground.

“The driver, alone in the vehicle and the sole person involved, had to be cut free from the wreckage,” explained Captain Grégory Petit, who led the operation on Sunday morning. The victim, in his thirties, suffered multiple traumas.

After stabilisation by emergency responders, the victim was transferred to the emergency department of the Centre Union du CHWapi in Tournai.

Firefighters remained on the scene until 1:40 at night. Due to the accident, part of the neighbourhood was without power for several hours.
