Victor Van Rossem, a filmmaker from Ghent, has had his 3D short film “Toward a Fundamental Theory of Physics” selected for the 63rd New York Film Festival.
The production premiered in May at the Art Cinema OFFoff in Ghent and was made independently during a residency in the city without support from the Flanders Audiovisual Fund.
Van Rossem filmed using 293 16mm lenses with a Time-Slice camera he built himself, an analogue precursor to the “Bullet Time” technique made famous by “The Matrix”.
The film is a groundbreaking 3D exploration of cinema as a physical phenomenon, with an original score by pianist Thijs Troch.
“Toward a Fundamental Theory of Physics” will be showcased in the Currents section, which is dedicated to innovative cinema, alongside works by Tsai Ming-liang and Radu Jude, among others.
The festival will run from 26 September to 13 October in New York.
