The Mayor of Koekelberg, Olivia P’tito, has expressed concern about the noise pollution affecting her municipality due to planes landing at nearby Zaventem Airport.
This situation arises from ongoing construction at the airport, prompting the mayor to call for immediate action.
Runway 07R/25L has been closed for repairs for nearly the entire summer, while Runway 01/19 is out of service from 2 to 12 August, leaving only Runway 07L/25R operational. This has been affecting preferential flight paths.
“I don’t understand why all aircraft are being directed over some of Brussels’ most densely populated areas," said Mayor P'tito. "We are willing to cooperate, but this cannot be the solution.”
The municipality reports that since Sunday, many residents have endured unusual and concentrated flight noise overhead.
Mayor P'tito has requested measures from Mobility Minister Jean-Luc Crucke and the Brussels administration.
She is advocating for the swift installation of monitoring equipment to ensure compliance with noise regulations and scheduling.
She is also urging a prompt reduction of the noise disturbance and says she expects explanations from airport officials.
