Belgium plans to build €1 billion worth of military data centres, De Tijd reports on Thursday, based on a draft law by Federal Defence Minister Theo Francken (N-VA).

The plan is part of the draft military program law for the 2026-2034 period and provides for the construction of data centres at several secure locations throughout the country. These should guarantee uninterrupted service operation. Construction is scheduled for the end of the legislative term in 2029.

The infrastructure will be crucial for military operations. It will process real-time data from drones, satellites, and combat units. According to a Defence source cited by De Tijd, the centres will also securely store and process data from other government services.

The data centres are part of Belgium's digital sovereignty strategy, which aims to reduce dependence on commercial and foreign suppliers.
