The United Nations (UN) “welcomes the ongoing constructive dialogue between Member States,” Stéphane Dujarric, spokesperson for UN Secretary-General António Guterres, told Russian news agency Tass on Friday after the bilateral meeting between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin on the war in Ukraine.

“The Secretary-General reiterates his call for an immediate, complete and unconditional ceasefire as a first step towards a just, comprehensive and lasting peace in Ukraine, fully respecting the sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity of Ukraine within its internationally recognized borders, in accordance with the UN Charter, international law and relevant UN resolutions,” Dujarric added. “The United Nations stands ready to support all meaningful efforts in this regard.”

Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin held a summit lasting more than three hours focused on the war in Ukraine, without revealing any details about the content of their discussions at a press conference.

Donald Trump described the meeting as “very productive,” while Vladimir Putin called it “constructive,” but neither provided any details on a possible peaceful resolution to the conflict in Ukraine.

The person most directly affected by the conflict, but notably absent from the meeting, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, said he was “counting” on Donald Trump to bring an end to the conflict.
