Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy will travel to the American capital Washington on Monday for a meeting with President Donald Trump. Zelenskyy announced this on Saturday on X.
‘I will meet with US President Trump in Washington on Monday to discuss all the details of ending the killings and the war. I am grateful for the invitation,’ he said.
The announcement comes a few hours after the summit meeting between President Trump and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin in Anchorage, Alaska. The topic of discussion was, of course, the war in Ukraine, but neither side was able to announce any concrete results afterwards. There is also no ceasefire in sight for the time being. Afterwards, Trump gave feedback to Zelenskyy and the European leaders.
‘We had a long and substantive conversation with President Trump,’ the Ukrainian leader wrote on social media. The conversation reportedly lasted an hour, after which the European leaders joined for another half hour. ‘President Trump informed us about his meeting with the Russian leader and the main points of their conversation. It is important that America's power has an impact on the development of the situation,’ Zelenskyy said.
He confirmed his support for Trump's proposal for a trilateral meeting between Ukraine, the US and Russia. ‘Ukraine confirms that important issues can be discussed at the leadership level and that a trilateral format is appropriate for this.’ According to the Kremlin, such a trilateral meeting was not discussed in Anchorage.
Zelenskyy also emphasises the importance of keeping the Europeans on board at every step to ensure reliable security guarantees together with America. ‘We also discussed positive signals from the American camp regarding participation in ensuring Ukraine's security,’ he added.
