On Sunday morning, local police broke up an illegal gathering of tuned cars organised on an industrial site in Bree, Limburg. Twelve people, all Dutch or German nationals, were arrested, local mayor Sietse Wils confirmed on Sunday. There were several hundred participants.
"They had travelled down via Weert (in the Netherlands), Bocholt and Kinrooi. When the first police team arrived, there were around 600 people," said the mayor.
Two local police officers had travelled in an unmarked vehicle, but participants realised they were police officers and raised the alarm. According to the mayor, they were well trained, immediately donning balaclavas and ski goggles to avoid being affected by tear gas. The two officers called for backup and the event was interrupted.
A similar gathering had already taken place on the same industrial site last year.
