One in three companies is guilty of social fraud, according to figures from the Social Information and Research Service (SIRS).

Restaurants, cleaning companies, and car washes are the most affected. In the latter sector, nearly 60% of inspections detect social fraud.

SIRS carried out 7,500 checks in the first half of 2025, 35% of which revealed an offence.

The Federal Government wants to step up the fight against social fraud with tougher penalties, more surprise checks, and increased staffing levels.

By 2029, 300 additional inspectors will need to be recruited, according to the Minister for Combating Social Fraud, Rob Beenders.
