A 17-year-old boy was shot and killed on the evening of 7 August in Dauw Park, near Place Alphonse Lemmens, in Anderlecht, West Brussels.
His death, first reported by the Flemish outlet 'Bruzz,' was confirmed on Tuesday by the Brussels Prosecutor’s Office. The victim’s identity was initially unknown but was confirmed about 10 days later following an investigation.
The shooting occurred at about 8:00 pm. The teenager was critically injured and transported to hospital, where he succumbed to his wounds. Police detained one individual at the scene and recovered several bullet casings.
According to 'Bruzz,' the boy was an undocumented migrant residing in Belgium. However, the prosecutor’s office declined to comment on this detail.
Brussels has seen a worrying rise in gun violence this summer, with 23 shootings reported since the start of the season. Since January, a total of 60 such incidents have occurred in the capital, most of them linked to drug trafficking, authorities say.
This year alone, seven people have died in shootings across the city. The teenager killed in Dauw Park was the youngest of these victims.
