30 residents were forced to evacuate after a fire broke out early Wednesday morning in an apartment building in Liège, with one person hospitalised for mild smoke inhalation.
The fire started at around 4:51 on the fourth floor of a building at 17 Quai du Roi Albert. Flames were visible when emergency services arrived. “About thirty people, living in the right section of the building, were evacuated. Only one person was transported to the hospital for mild carbon monoxide poisoning,” Liège police stated in a press release.
Firefighters quickly brought the blaze under control, preventing it from spreading to the left side of the building. However, the affected apartment suffered significant damage.
On Wednesday morning, the Public Safety and Health Service (SSSP) was expected to inspect the building to determine if evacuated residents could return. “In the meantime, evacuees are being assisted by the police. Social services from the city and CPAS are also on-site to provide support,” the police added.
Georges Truffaut Avenue was closed towards the Atlas Bridge until 7:20, causing some traffic disruptions.
The cause of the fire remains unknown, and an investigation has been launched to determine what sparked the incident.
