Around sixty supporters of Greek football club AEK Athens were detained in Brussels on Thursday afternoon, near the iconic Grand Place, according to the South Brussels police (Anderlecht/Sint-Gilles/Vorst).
Despite reports in some media outlets, no clashes occurred between the Greek supporters and fans of RSC Anderlecht, the police clarified.
The detention came ahead of Thursday night’s Conference League qualifying match between AEK Athens and RSC Anderlecht. Police conducted checks on a group of Greek supporters during the build-up to the game, discovering several items that could threaten the safe progression of the match.
As a result, the group—comprising roughly sixty individuals—was taken into administrative custody and will not be able to attend the match.
One other person was handed over to the Brussels Public Prosecutor’s Office for charges related to vandalism, police added.
