The US Government has announced stricter monitoring of the approximately 55 million people holding valid visas to identify potential violations that could lead to deportation.
According to a spokesperson for the State Department, the new measures focus on the "more than 55 million foreigners currently holding a valid US visa."
Officials plan to revoke visas "as soon as there are indications of potential ineligibility."
Grounds for such actions include overstaying permitted durations, engaging in criminal activities, posing threats to public safety, participating in terrorist activities, or supporting terrorist organisations.
The screenings will rely on “all available information,” including records from police and immigration authorities. Officials will also consider evidence that emerges after a visa has been issued, the spokesperson added.
On Monday, the department revealed it had already revoked visas for over 6,000 foreign students, with more than half of those cases linked to legal violations.
