A fierce fire broke out early Sunday morning at the MIWA waste facility in Sint-Niklaas, prompting local authorities to issue a BE-Alert warning.

The blaze started just after 4:00 at the site on Vlyminckshoek, engulfing MIWA’s office building, which was undergoing renovation works. The building was completely destroyed, but the fire did not spread to the nearby warehouses.

At 5:30, a precautionary BE-Alert was sent to nearby residents, advising them to close windows and doors and shut off ventilation systems.

By 6:00, firefighters had the fire under control. During the extinguishing efforts, some light smoke was still visible in the area. Just after 8:00, residents were informed that they could safely reopen windows, doors, and ventilation systems.

Authorities confirmed that no asbestos was present in the affected buildings. Local officials continue to monitor the situation and are investigating the cause of the fire.
