Three police officers from Charleroi’s narcotics unit were charged in July for embezzlement by a public official, the Charleroi prosecutor’s office confirmed late Monday morning, following a report by RTL Info.
The investigation involves six officers in total.
The case gained further attention after a federal police special unit officer was killed during a “reinforced” raid on 18 March 2024 in Lodelinsart, Charleroi. Officers entered the suspect’s residence and were met with gunfire from behind a bedroom door. Two officers were injured in the incident, one of them critically.
Amid these developments, three Charleroi police officers were arrested and charged with offences including forgery by a public official, breach of trust, illegal possession of weapons, and violation of professional secrecy. One of the officers is also being investigated for involvement in a criminal organisation in a separate case.
The Charleroi prosecutor’s office revealed that three additional officers from the narcotics unit were charged in July, also for embezzlement, following a series of interviews conducted earlier. The three officers charged over a year ago in the same case are currently subject to alternative judicial measures.
The investigation continues.
