Flemish majority parties Christen Democratisch en Vlaams (CD&V) and Vooruit have submitted a resolution in parliament calling on the Government of Flanders to take measures against Israel.
The move by the Christian Democratic party and its Socialist partner comes in response to the current escalation by Israel of its offensive in Gaza and the occupied Palestinian territories.
The two parties submitted the resolution without their coalition partner, the Nieuw Vlaamse Alliantie (N-VA), in what could be seen as a way to pressure the N-VA and Minister-President Matthias Diependaele into adopting stricter measures against Israel.
The resolution urges the Flemish Government to advocate at the European level for the suspension of the EU-Israel Association Agreement and to push the federal government to recognise Palestine at the UN General Assembly in New York in September.
It also proposes a European ban on trade and investment involving illegal Israeli settlements and calls for the closure of the Flanders Investment & Trade (FIT) office in Tel Aviv.
