Around 500 people attended a silent march in Zeebrugge on Thursday evening to honour a man who was beaten to death last week.

The crowd walked together behind the victim’s widow in a sombre tribute. According to police, the commemoration proceeded peacefully and without incident.

The 56-year-old victim was fatally assaulted by two men last Friday night on Mercatorstraat, Zeebrugge. A witness attempted to resuscitate the man before emergency services arrived, but he succumbed to his injuries at the scene.

Witnesses reported that a dispute had broken out earlier between the victim and his attackers at a nearby night shop. However, the exact motive behind the attack remains unclear.

On Tuesday evening, two suspects were arrested in Poland in connection with the case. Both are reported to be Russian nationals.
