An overnight fire has left an apartment building in Torhout uninhabitable, with authorities investigating potential arson as the cause.

The fire broke out around 3:30 on Saturday in Zuidstraat, prompting swift action from firefighters. Five residents were evacuated, and three were taken to hospital due to smoke inhalation. They have since been discharged.

The building suffered extensive damage, leading to it being declared unfit for residents.

The West Flanders public prosecutor’s office has appointed a fire expert to investigate the incident. Initial findings suggest the fire may have been started deliberately.

Forensic teams have also examined the site to gather evidence. While inquiries are ongoing, no arrests have been made so far.

Authorities continue to piece together the circumstances surrounding the blaze.
