A severe road accident involving a car and a lorry occurred late Friday afternoon in the Houtaing area near Ath, claiming the life of the car driver.
Emergency services were alerted at 17:35 on Friday about a serious crash on the Route de Frasnes (RN528) in the village of Houtaing, Ath. Rescue teams, led by Captain Éric Stasik from the Rebaix (Ath) fire station, dispatched a vehicle for extrication, two marking lorries, a tanker, a mobile emergency unit (SMUR), and two ambulances to the scene.
The incident took place between the Chaussée Brunehault crossroads and the Chemin de la Billebacq, close to the Domaine de la Berlière. A high-powered car and a lorry collided nearly head-on for reasons yet to be determined by an ongoing investigation.
The violent impact ejected the car’s driver from the vehicle. Critically injured, the man was treated on-site by medics before being rushed to the emergency department of ChWapi hospital in Tournai.
Sadly, the driver passed away from his injuries on Saturday morning. The victim, a man in his thirties, was a resident of Mainvault, part of the Ath district.
The lorry driver was unharmed.
