A man was discovered seriously injured in the Brussels municipality of Sint-Agatha-Berchem on Saturday evening, and authorities believe he was severely beaten.
The police were called to a fight on the Gentsesteenweg around 22:40, according to Commissioner Johan Berckmans, spokesperson for the Brussels West police zone. “At the scene, our officers found a man who had sustained serious injuries after being attacked by one or more individuals. He was taken to hospital but is not in a life-threatening condition,” said Berckmans.
Nearby, officers found two firearm magazines while searching the area. Later that same night, police apprehended a man armed with a firearm at a residence on Koekelberglaan, following further investigation.
“The man has been taken to the police station and will be questioned,” Berckmans added. “There is likely a connection between the fight, the discovery of the magazines, and the arrest, but further investigation will clarify this.”
While rumours circulated on Saturday night that shots had been fired during the incident, the police stated they could not confirm this. “We have not found any bullet casings or impact marks in the area,” said the spokesperson.
Authorities are continuing their investigation into the precise circumstances of the events.
