Drivers in Belgium will soon be able to use camper vans weighing up to 4.250 kilograms with a category B driving licence, instead of requiring the heavier C licence, as long as they complete a short training or pass an exam.
The announcement, reported on Monday by Het Nieuwsblad and Het Belang van Limburg, comes after political agreement was reached at the European level.
Federal Mobility Minister Jean-Luc Crucke (Les Engagés) stated that the European Council, Commission, and Parliament support the change, although it still needs to be formally adopted into a new EU directive and subsequently implemented in Belgian law.
For safety reasons, motorists wishing to take advantage of this rule will still need to fulfil an additional requirement, such as completing a brief course or passing a test.
This move is designed to make it easier for people to operate heavier camping vehicles, but authorities are maintaining basic safety standards for drivers handling larger vehicles on public roads.
