The Dutch brewing giant Heineken and Danish rival Carlsberg decided to completely withdraw from Russia stating that "It is no longer possible to remain active in Russia in a profitable way under the current circumstances."

Heineken had previously announced, following Russia's invasion of Ukraine, that it would suspend the production and sale of the beer in Russia. The group also produces several local beers in Russia but is now reflecting on the future of these activities.

"We are shocked and deeply saddened to watch the war in Ukraine continue to unfold and intensify," the group said.

Not long after Heineken's statement, Carlsberg released one as well, announcing that the company made the decision to seek a full disposal of their business in Russia, as it believes it's the right thing to do.

Heineken hopes to find a new owner for its Russian activities. In the meantime, the company will continue to pay the salaries of the 1,800 employees in Russia until the end of the year.
