A call centre set up by the Belgian authorities to provide information on the reception, registration and accompaniment of Ukrainian refugees has handled over 6,000 calls in one month, Belga News Agency reports.

Similarly, a newly launched website created for the same purpose has already been visited 180,000 times, Secretary of State for Asylum and Migration Sammy Mahdi told De Zondag newspaper.

The call centre and website were both set up in March. Ten people are mobilised to respond to requests via the call centre, which registers an average of 190 calls per day.

“During the course of the past week, there was a net drop in the number of calls,” Mahdi said. “This corresponds to a drop in the refugee inflow" to Belgium.

According to reports from De Tijd, more than three-quarters of Ukrainian refugees that register to stay in Belgium are staying here without government assistance, through which they would be given housing in reception facilities.

Of the 30,807 officially registered Ukrainian refugees in Belgium, 7,101 have requested a reception place from the government at the registration desk at Heysel, according to the figures of the Immigration Department.
