Belgian authorities ordered 680 Afghans to leave the country in March, the Flemish public broadcaster VRT reported on Saturday.

The Office of the Commissioner-General for Refugees and Stateless Persons feels the situation in Afghanistan has changed since the Taliban takeover in August.

“There is still violence but not everyone is targeted by the Taliban,” Commissioner-General Dirk Van Den Bulck told VRT, Belga News Agency reports. “They are targeting very specific profiles.”

“Afghan asylum seekers were called up in February and in March, many of them received a negative response” along with an order to leave the country, Van Den Bulck added.

According to him, only asylum seekers who would personally be in real danger in Afghanistan have received an authorisation to remain in Belgium. These include human rights advocates, journalists, and people whose sexual orientation is not tolerated by the Taliban.
