Belgium’s Foreign Minister Maxime Prévot and Dutch Prime Minister Rob Jetten have condemned the deadly car attack on the Pride march in Berlin, calling it an assault on freedom and tolerance.
Prévot, of Les Engagés, responded on Sunday by expressing his sympathy for the victims and their families. He said an attack on a Pride march was an attack on the basic right to be yourself, openly and without fear.
“What should have been a day of joy ended in horror,” Prévot said.
Jetten voiced a similar message, saying the Netherlands stands shoulder to shoulder with Germany at difficult moments. He described the incident as a direct attack on a free and tolerant society.
The reaction comes as Amsterdam prepares to hold its own Pride parade today as part of WorldPride.
Amsterdam mayor Femke Halsema has already announced that extra security measures will be introduced where necessary following the attack in Berlin.
