Belgium's defence forces will attend the Ronquières Festival and Suikerrock in Tienen this weekend for the first time, in an effort to reach young people and promote military careers.

Information stands at both festivals will introduce visitors to the defence forces' missions and the range of career paths available.

At the Ronquières Festival, defence personnel will also supervise a zipwire.

Defence Minister Theo Francken (N-VA) is due to make a brief visit to the recruitment stand in Tienen on Saturday.

During the visit, he will meet the soldiers and staff on site and explain why recruitment and the visibility of the defence forces at events attended by large numbers of young people are important.

"The organiser of Suikerrock, Walter Kestens, contacted me himself with this idea," the minister said.

"We are looking to attract 5,000 new candidates every year, and being present at a festival is a good way to reach young people," he added.
