Shots were fired again in Saint-Gilles on Monday evening, the third consecutive day of gun violence in the Brussels municipality, but no one was injured.
The shooting occurred at about 9.00 p.m. at Place des Deux Bancs, at the junction of Rue Gustave Defnet and Rue du Monténégro, Mayor Jean Spinette said. He said an automatic weapon was used and the gunman fled. Customers inside a nearby pizzeria were forced to lie on the floor.
This was the second shooting in three days at the same location.
On Saturday evening, a man was shot in the leg at Place des Deux Bancs. His injuries were not life-threatening.
On Sunday morning at about 07:00, another shooting took place on Chaussée de Forest, also in Saint-Gilles.
A bullet went through the window of a flat at 4 Rue Fontainas, near Porte de Hal. The woman inside was in bed at the time and was not injured, but was badly shaken.
The bedroom was sealed off while investigators from the federal police forensic laboratory examined the scene.
Further shots were reported on Chaussée de Forest during the night from Sunday to Monday. Two suspects were arrested.
The incidents follow a separate shooting in Anderlecht on the night from Friday to Saturday. A police station in the Brussels-South police zone was targeted, although no one was hurt. Bullet marks were found on the building in Rue Démosthène, and two suspects fled the scene on scooters.
Interior Minister Bernard Quintin is due to visit Saint-Gilles on Tuesday.
