On Wednesday afternoon, a man was badly burned while working on a building site in the Brussels suburb of Braine-l'Alleud.

Belga News agency have reported that the accident occurred shortly before 14:45, during the renovation of a façade of the Cardinal Mercier College.

A contractor and his retired worker were redoing the college's façade when a nearby water pump exploded for an undetermined reason. As the worker was standing next to it, he sustained second-degree burns.

The fire then spread to the scaffold on which the contractor was standing, but he was unharmed.

The school's teachers acted before the fire brigade arrived, thus preventing any further damage.

The worker was taken to hospital, although his life is not believed to be in danger.

The site has been closed until further notice and a health and safety team has already visited the site.

The Labour Inspectorate will conduct an investigation to ascertain, among other things, whether the working conditions were respected on the site.
