Two people were arrested last night in the Antwerp district of Borgerhout after shots were fired at a restaurant and a carwash, announced the Antwerp public prosecutor's office on Friday.

The two suspects were intercepted around 02:50 last night in the Juul Grietensstraat in Borgerhout, shortly after a series of shots were fired at the front of the Pokebowl restaurant on the corner of the William Woodstraat and the Stenenburg. Several bullet holes can be seen in the shop shutters.

"It concerns a 19-year-old man from Sint-Niklaas (in the East Flanders province) and a 25-year-old of Dutch nationality," public prosecutor Lieselotte Claessens said in a press release, adding that the weapon was also found.

The authorities have opened an investigation to see if there is a connection with the bullet holes that were found in the facade of a carwash in the Sint-Rochusstraat in Deurne earlier that evening.

That building is said to be linked to (the family of) Moroccan-Belgian heavyweight kickboxer Jamal Ben Saddik, just like several other buildings that were targeted during attacks in Antwerp in the past weeks.

Police and prosecutors are investigating whether there is a link with the drug trade.
